GANDHY

Having completed 75 years of history in February 2024 and founded by a group of black dockworkers from Salvador in 1949, organized by Vavá Madeira, the Afoxé Filhos de Gandhy was born inspired by the philosophy of peace and non-violence propagated by Mahatma Gandhi, a leader of the Indian people who was assassinated a year before the bloco was founded.
In the words of Nei Lopes, researcher, writer, composer and singer, the carnival procession made up only of men, which began as a party for conscious boys, became a solemn afoxé parade, authentic “street candomblé”, marking a place of important Afro-cultural action beyond the annual carnival agenda.
Traditionally, they parade through Largo do Pelourinho perfumed with lavender, dressed in blue and white in reference to the orishas Oxalá and Ogum, and preach peaceful messages, reaffirming the black presence in Bahian territory and, specifically, valuing the aesthetics of the beauty of the black man in the capital of Bahia and in Brazil.
